Robert Gordon Boies Schiller Flexner LLP this week announced two prominent hires — a Herrick Feinstein LLP attorney with a history of working on multibillion-dollar restructurings and a firm alum from The Walt Disney Co. who brings experience in copyright matters and artificial intelligence.
Robert Gordon and Frederick Lee join Boies in New York, although Lee, a former vice president and assistant chief counsel at Disney, plans to relocate to Los Angeles.
"For me, [moving to Boies] has a lot to do with both BSF's incredible depth in litigation and investigations as well as its profile from a conflict standpoint as a result of being primarily focused on litigation engagements," Gordon told Law360 Pulse on Tuesday.
Gordon's wide-ranging restructuring expertise includes representing the Official Retiree Committee in the restructuring of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico — the largest in-court public sector restructuring in U.S. history.
"The key thing about these public sector cases is that they're still very rare and novel and they create lots of novel issues that not only get litigation at the bankruptcy court level, but they go up to the appellate level, so having a firm that is comfortable and agile at all levels of the appeal process as well as at the trial court level is hugely invaluable," he said.
Lee, who served as the global head of product legal for Disney's streaming services as part of his most recent role, spent seven years as a Boies associate earlier in his legal career. He has also worked as general counsel to blockchain technology company Hiro Systems, where he led the first-ever U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission-qualified digital token offering, and is an angel investor in an AI company, according to the firm.
"I was lucky to be at BSF for several years between clerkships," he told Law360 Pulse on Tuesday. "I keep coming back."
Lee said he was attracted to the firm's culture and its litigation capabilities, calling Boies Schiller "the best place in the nation for litigation."
"Because it's young, it's still quite nimble and has the entrepreneurial mindset," he added.
Frederick earned his law degree from the New York University School of Law. Gordon earned his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School.
"We are excited to welcome Bob and Freddie to the firm," Chairman Matthew L. Schwartz said in a statement. "Bob strengthens our offering for clients involved with investment disputes, particularly in the distressed debt and restructuring space; and Freddie returns to BSF with deeply relevant experience in the issues impacting technology, media, and entertainment companies today."
